5 Ways to Get the Most Out of College

College can be overwhelming. You’re at that age where you’re legally an adult, but still somehow a kid being told when and where to be on a daily basis. Plus, for some, you’re still living at home getting help from your parents. Well, there are some ways to not only overcome your college years, but to get the most out of them. Here are five tips just for you.

1. Go to Class

This is pretty obvious and that’s why it’s first. If you don’t go to class you’re not only wasting your time there, but a lot of money as well as the chance someone else could’ve had. They didn’t get in because you did, so show you care and actually go to class. There is really no excuse not to go. Also, I shouldn’t have to say this – but don’t just go to find out where the next party is that weekend. Go, learn, and then study.

2. Join a Club

It’s really hard to find and make like-minded friends when you’re out of school and all you have to depend on are coworkers for social interaction. Plus, learning the ins and outs of what it takes to run a club will come in handy in the future. Oh, and it’s fun.

3. Intern

Do you realize how many internships are only for students?! Take full advantage of this while you can. Plus, it’s a foot in the door for after you graduate. Did you know that Mindy Kaling interned at The Late Show with Conan O’Brien before she made it? See, that could be you if you do your homework and apply to internships that are directed towards what you want to do.

4. Get a Job

Having a great GPA is cool, but a lot of jobs take a look at your experience. Also, having a part time job allows you to pay some of your way through school. That means you’ll have way less debt when you’re out. While all your friends are avoiding calls from Sallie Mae, you’ll be living without that altogether.

5. Travel Abroad

Rachel Dratch said in her memoir that her therapist told her, no matter what was the trouble, that she needed to take a trip alone. When she finally did, she headed to South America and admitted that it did help her. It’s about discovering who you are when taken outside of your comfort zone. Plus, it’s easier to do when you’re a student. Your school can help you set it up and the dreaded loans are there to aid you as well.

Now go to bed so you can get to class and when you go – remember to actually pay attention because unlike school before now, this is costing money. Don’t be scared to join a club. You never know, you could make a friend for life. When you’re not getting in on the clubs, for heaven’s sake – intern like crazy. That could be the path to your future career. When you have the time, part-time work is not a chore, it’s your friend and last but not least – take a semester or two away from the norm and study abroad. It’ll not only change your surroundings, but your life.
