Roommates + Periods: Tips for Surviving THAT Week
If you’re a female college student who lives in a dorm, you know the struggle that is period week/weeks. After living together for a while (or sometimes no time at all), you and your roomies sync up and all get sad crunk (picture someone getting “crunk” while crying) together. I know this because I have collectively had 8 roommates, each with very different “period personalities.”
There are many different types of period personalities during that week, and most people have a few. Here are some examples:
- The one who will yell at your guests if they don’t like them
- The one who cries all week – Maybe from a puppy in a cup, maybe from her lack of Nutella
- The one who stares at you all week. – No talking, just angry stares
- The one who won’t stop calling her boyfriend – “No, you hang up first.” PLEASE HANG UP
- The one who won’t stop calling her mom (this is more of a freshman roommate problem)
- The one who won’t stop eating random foods, like salsa and pickles.
- The one who hides in her room, doing who knows what.
- The one who really, really wants a boyfriend – She wants a Darcy
- The one who really, really just wants a hook up – No judgement
- The one who is hangry all the time
- The one with rabies – aka The one who doesn’t like drinking water
- The badass – she doesn’t seem affected at all, in fact she seems to get more done
There are many more types, these are just the few I have interacted with. I may or may not be the first type…
Now that you know how your roomies might react during this week, here are some ways to make everyone happy…well, happier:
- Have movie parties! – Watch sad movies, rom-coms, and some classic Jane Austen’s so you can cry it out together! Just a warning though, you might have that one roommate that hates love during this week, watch these movies at your own risk.
- Bake for your roomies – I personally won’t do this because I am notorious for ruining anything that involves the oven, but I really appreciate it when my roomies bake me surprise treats!
- Don’t make any sudden movements – Just Kidding! But really, don’t go running around your room, your roommates want peace and quiet.
- Do an act of service – Wash their dishes, make their bed, take out the trash. The little things make a big difference!
- Scream together – If you’re all really frustrated, let your feelings out, whether it be through screaming, working out, or maybe even meditating.
- Simply be there – Be a shoulder to laugh and cry on. If you’re roommate looks glum, ask her about it without being pushy.
Obviously these are good tips no matter what time of the month, but I promise these will help ease the craziness of THAT week. Comment below with your strategies and/or funny roommate stories – we might feature your response in a new post!
