Why The Brutally Honest Friend Is Best

We all look to our close friends for caring compassion and reassurance of how we are feeling. Lines like, ‘Hun he misses you too,’ and ‘He sucks, you can do better,’ are almost always the go-to. But these don’t help us move forward or learn from our experiences. Honestly, those are the lines that lead to us embarrassing ourselves and having regrets. The friend that can look you in the eyes and tell you the cold, hard, truth is the friend to cherish most.

Self Control
This friend has no problem pulling out the, ‘Self control’ line to begin with. She is going to listen to you rant, then she is going to convince you that the situation isn’t the end of the world. She will make the beginning of the conversation as straight forward as can be. Letting you know that the only solution is simple: self control. If you can’t control your emotions and your interactions, there is no solution to benefit you.

Adding and Subtracting
After the problem is presented she is already keeping tabs on things you have left out, or details that were sugar-coated in the story. Don’t fool yourself; you know the first thing she’ll ask is if this was exactly what happened. Instead of playing along and giving advice to the problem you have partially made in your head, she will question it until all the puzzle pieces match up. We all know it is easy to manipulate a story when it is our own.

Comfort
Don’t get caught up in the questioning and brutal honesty. She still cares about you. More then any friend that would have immediately bashed or supported the subject at hand. She’s your best friend, and if you broke down in tears you know she wouldn’t hesitate to comfort you. She cares enough about you to break down the topic and give you truthful advice without taking the easy way out.

When She Tells You That You’re Overreacting
Don’t take this personally, she is doing the best she can. Although we want our friends to take our side, that’s not always what’s best, and your friend knows this. It’s better to have a friend that will be honest instead of letting you look like a fool. So when she informs you that you might want to try to see it from the other perspective, take advantage of the suggestion. You may be surprised what solutions you guys can come up with when debating the topic.

Through any situation your honest best friend is the best solution. She has been around you long enough to know what will make you happiest in the end. After all, you guys are best friends, and that means always helping each other out, whether it’s easy or tough.
